Teaching and Consultancy: Introduction

Alan Charlton also offers specialist advice and tuition in composition and has a wealth of composition-related teaching experience.

He taught undergraduate composition for two years at the University of Bristol from 1993-95. As well as devising several workshops and concerts, including an opera written by the whole year group, he also marked orchestration and gave analysis seminars during this time.

In his post of Composer-in-Residence at Bedford School from 1999-2002, he taught GCSE and A level composition, in groups and to individuals, and devised composition projects for boys in the Preparatory School. Several of his pupils went on to gain places on the National Youth Orchestra Composers' course and to specialise in composition at university.

From 2005-2009 he was Head of Music Technology at Bedford School, teaching Edexcel A level Music Technology. His teaching was rated as 'outstanding' in the 2006 OFSTED inspection and over 75% of his students went on to study Music or Music Technology at university or music college.

An experienced A level examiner, Alan has worked for Edexcel since 2003, marking A level Music composition and compositional techniques and A level Music Technology Arranging, Recording and Sequencing.
